John William Hill (American, 1812 - 1879) / Mountain Stream (Catskill Creek), 1863
Watercolour on paper, 13.25" x 17" / The Brooklyn Museum 1991.44.1
John William Hill was born in London and immigrated with his family to the United States at the age of seven, initially residing in Philadelphia and then moving to New York City in 1822. Early in his career, John William Hill was a topographical artist, employed by the New York State Geological Survey and a New York City firm to draw views of many American cities. In later life he turned to "naturalism" and worked almost exclusively as a landscape painter. He also created some flower and bird studies. He made detailed pictures directly from nature, many in watercolor and executed in a stipple technique with tiny brushes normally employed for miniatures.
Wow, Disney stamps! "Ratatouille" and "Cars", both movies of which I have seen and enjoyed!
