Norma Jeane Mortenson on 1 June 1926, later baptised as Norma Jeane Baker. Later still she changed her name to Marilyn Monroe. Died when she was only 36 years old.

Guess what went through my mind when I first saw this postcard? The mushroom in Alice in Wonderland! Specifically, the mushroom that the Caterpillar was sitting on while smoking a hookah. Excerpt from Alice in Wonderland:-

The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

"Who are YOU?" said the Caterpillar.

This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, "I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then."

"What do you mean by that?" said the Caterpillar sternly. "Explain yourself!"

"I can't explain MYSELF, I'm afraid, sir" said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."

"I don't see," said the Caterpillar.

"I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," Alice replied very politely, "for I can't understand it myself to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing."

"It isn't," said the Caterpillar.

"Well, perhaps you haven't found it so yet," said Alice; "but when you have to turn into a chrysalis--you will some day, you know--and then after that into a butterfly, I should think you'll feel it a little queer, won't you?"

"Not a bit," said the Caterpillar.

"Well, perhaps your feelings may be different," said Alice; "all I know is, it would feel very queer to ME."

"You!" said the Caterpillar contemptuously. "Who are YOU?"

Which brought them back again to the beginning of the conversation. Alice felt a little irritated at the Caterpillar's making such VERY short remarks, and she drew herself up and said, very gravely, "I think, you out to tell me who YOU are, first."

This was what I was thinking of when I saw that rock formation on the postcard!

Pamukkale means "cotton castle". It is Turkey's foremost mineral-bath spa because of its natural beauty: hot calcium-laden waters spring from the earth and cascade over a cliff. As they cool they form travertines of hard, brilliantly white calcium that form pools like shell-shaped basins. Pamukkale is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It looks spectacular to me and I wish to see it!

A multi-view card from the west of Turkey showing amongst others, the Trojan Horse in Canakkale. Troy is a city which existed over 4,000 years and known as the centre of ancient civilisations. Troy is believed to be located in Hisarlik near Canakkale province where the remains of this excavated city can be visited.

A Perfect Squash

In a cat's eye, everything belongs to cats. That includes, the sink. It is obvious that these cats love to cosy up in the sink!! And they are all squashed up!! :D

Twisted Fingers

Sihirliflut sent this card for the Weird RR group. At first glance I missed its weirdness. Until I gave the card a closer look and I went, eeeww! Those twisted fingers gave me the creeps! Yikes!

The stamps are of (1) Süleymaniye Mosque constructed by Mimar Sinan (architect, engineer) on the order of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. (2) Karaoğlan is a Turkish historical comic book that was created in 1963.The main character, Karaoğlan, 23 years old, is a brave young Uygur Turkic adventurer who worked as a scout in Ghenghiz Khan's army.

My first card showing traditional folk clothing from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Following Sicily and Sardinia, Cyprus is the third largest island in the eastern Mediterranean. The name "Cyprus" comes from the Greek word for copper ( "kypros"). People of both Greek and Turkish heritage live on Cyprus today.

I like these colourful traditional costumes. I have heard of Cyprus Lefkara lacework and embroidery on linen clothing and wonder whether this was used to edge the headscarves, collars and blouses worn by the children.

Alanya

Gunes wrote that Alanya is a touristic place in the south coast of Turkey.

Alanya is a seaside holiday resort favoured for its warm seawater and white sandy beaches that stretch for miles. Its town has an interesting history derived from the Ptolemaic, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman empires. Places to visit include the Damlatas Caves, Alanya Castle and the Red Tower plus the ancient fortress complex. Alanya is also scenic as it is backed by the pine-forested Taurus Mountains.

Sultanahmet Mosque

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque or Sultanahmet Mosque (better known as the "Blue Mosque") was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet I when he was only 19 years old. Construction began in 1609 but was only completed after the sultan's death in 1617.

One of the most notable features of the Blue Mosque is its six minarets and the beautifully-arranged cascade of domes spilling down from the great central dome. The mosque is considered to be the last example of Ottoman classical architecture.

Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Istanbul. I think this multi-view card shows amongst others, Akatule Tower and Kocatepe Mosque.

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalicarsi in Turkish) is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world with its 4,400 shops, 3,000 firms, some 17 hans (separate inns for specific type of products), 64 streets, 25,000 employees, 4 fountains, 2 mosques and 22 gates. It's heaven for shoppers who wish to buy gold jewellery, precious stones and semi precious stones, carpets, leather goods, silverware, copperware, ceramic items, wall plates and good tile plates, fabrics, weaponry and antiques. Deeper inside the bazaar, tourists may explore religious icons, used watches, old pages of calligraphies or beautiful amber-stone work.

Antalya, Turkey

Antalya, Turkey's primary vacation holiday resort in the Mediterranean district (ancient Pamphylia), is a modern city with shady palm-lined boulevards, a prize-winning marina on the Mediterranean. In the picturesque historic quarter, Kaleici, narrow winding streets and old wooden houses abut the ancient city walls. Many buildings here date from Ottoman times, a few from Roman times, and some have been restored as houses,boutique hotels and inns, pensions or restaurants. The two most important Ottoman mosques in the city are the 16th century Murat Pasa Mosque, remarkable for its tile decoration, and the 18th century Tekeli Mehmet Pasa Mosque.
