Faux Deer Head

A golden faux deer head mounted on a blue wall.

Would you have a deer head for your wall decoration? I'm kinda squeamish, so, not really. But my grandad had a few in his day and I never really asked where he got them from. But I heard that my great-grandad hunted in his spare time..so maybe those deer heads were his? 

Both my great-grandad and grandad are long gone now, leaving the deer heads behind in the old family home....

This temple in Belur is dedicated to Chennakeshava, meaning "handsome Kesava". The facade of the temple is filled with intricate sculptures and friezes, inclusive of this awesome dancer.

A "pieta" is a Christian art painting or sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding and grieving over the dead body of Jesus. The word "pieta" means "pity". Many paintings and sculptures of "pieta" have been done. Michelangelo carved his sculpture of "La Pieta" out of marble.

A Busy Gargoyle

A Busy Gargoyle. The Cathedral's limestone gargoyles are used to spout rain water away from the stone walls. Their demonic or amusing forms express their creators' vivid imaginings. This Cathedral friend scurries busily on his way, briefcase in hand.

I'm surprised to discover that there is a webpage detailing each of the 112 gargoyles there. This particular gargoyle is named "Businessman a.k.a. The Yuppie", located at the east (rear) face of the southwest tower.

The Winged Victory

'V' is for 'Victory' or 'Victoire' 

The Winged Victory of Samothrace (Nike of Samothrace) is a Greek marble sculpture estimated to have been created around 190 BC, which can be seen in the Louvre Museum, Paris. It was found on the island of Samothrace, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, in 1863 by a French expedition. Nike is the goddess who personified triumph and victory in Greek Mythology. 

It's so beautiful. I do wonder about the unseen face as the statue is broken and headless.

I'm trying to figure out what the subject of this weird card actually is. A painting? A statue? A fountain head with water squirting from its eyes? It's quite gross in a way but a fascinating addition to my weird cards collection!

Lady Liberty

The statue (affectionately called "Lady Liberty") was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States for the 100th birthday of America's Independence. It has become an icon of freedom and of the United States.

Lady Liberty's crown has seven spikes, symbolising the Seven Seas across which liberty should be spread. In her left hand she holds a tablet with the Declaration of Independence and in her right hand a torch, symbolising Enlightenment. 

I wish to be brave enough to go to the staircase inside the statue and walk all the way up the 354 steps to the crown from where (as melaniaf informs), I can have a nice view over New York City...
