El Camino Real - The Royal Road
Modern U.S. Highway 101 follows approximately the route of the dirt path that linked the 21 Spanish Missions in California from San Diego to Sonoma. Sometimes called "The King's Highway", the missions were located about one day's journey apart by horseback. Today hundreds of road signs in the shape of mission bells line U.S. 101.
