Solovetsky Monastery
24 February 2011
Sender: Anna
From the net "The Solovetsky Monastery (Russian: Соловецкий монастырь) , also Solovki Monastery, is one of the most significant monastic institutions in Russia. The monastery is located on the large island of Solovetsky, a part of the Solovetsky Archipelago in the White Sea in northern Russia. The monastery became one of the richest and best known monasteries in Russia. In view of its remoteness, the monastery also became a place of exile for people both within the Church and the secular tsarist government. This prison-like function of the monastery continued until the later part of the nineteenth century. Under the Bolshevik government the monastery became one of the main prison labor camps and the model for labor camps of the Soviet Gulag Archipelago."
Anna informed that the stamp is also of the same monastery.

Taipei Story House
24 February 2011
Sender: redwhale0427
-Taiwan Story House-
From the net - "During the Japanese colonial period in 1913-1914, a prominent tea merchant named Chen Chao-chun constructed this Western style building on the banks of the Keelung River, overlooking the scenic forested hill of Yuanshan on the northern edge of Taipei. The building served as a meeting place for Taipei's local gentry, political figures, and tea merchants.
Since then, the Villa has gone through many changes. After Taiwan was returned to China in 1945, it was once used as a residence by Huang Kuo-shu, former President of the Legislative Yuan. It also at one time served as an art gallery. In 1979, the building was purchased by the Taipei city government and managed by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. In 1990, it was converted into an artist activity center, a role that it played until 1998 when the Villa was formally designated a historic site and closed down for renovation."

Monasterio de Yuso

Sender: Shelly
Monasterio de Yuso, La Rioja
Shelly wrote that this is Monastery of Yuso and Suso, San Millan, awarded UNESCO World Heritage Centre in 1994 not only for its artistic value but mainly because the first words ever written in Spanish were written and found there.
Read from the net that a monk had put annotations in Spanish and Basque next to a Latin text kept there.
House with Chimaeras

House with Chimaeras
From the net - "House with Chimaeras" was built in the period of 1901–1902 by noted architect Vladislav Gorodetsky and derived its popular name from its ornate decorations depicting various scenes of exotic animals and hunting scenes, which were added because Gorodetsky was an avid hunter. The name does not refer to the chimaera of mythology, but to an architectural style known as Chimaera decoration in which animal figures are applied as decorative elements to a building."
Beautiful stamps were affixed to the postcard!
Igreja Dos Grilos
24 February 2011
Sender: Miceu
Miceu wrote that this is a Basque church in old Porto called Igreja Dos Grilos.
From the net - "The Church and the College of São Lourenço, popularly known as the Igreja dos Grilos, is a collection of religious buildings in the city of Porto in Portugal .
Built by the Jesuits in 1577 in the Jesuit Baroque Mannerist style, funded by donations from the faithful, as well as Frei Luís Álvaro de Távora, buried here, the Church and Convent of São Lourenço were built with strong opposition from the municipality and the population. However, followers of Santo Inácio de Loyola eventually finished the much coveted college with free classes, which quickly gained a remarkable success."

"Bennet Sisters' Pentagram of Death"
"Pride and Prejudice and Zombies"- is a parody novel by Seth Grahame-Smith. I am a die-hard Jane Austen/Pride & Prejudice fan but yet to indulge in reading this parody. What a fun addition to my oddball/weird cards collection!
