The Old Red

Sender: MichelleW

Text on card: Lovingly known as "Old Red" because of its red sandstone exterior, the Dallas County Courthouse is a statement about the economic power of the Dallas region in 1892 when it was completed. The sixth courthouse to occupy this site, Old Red has recently been restored, including the replacement of the clock tower removed in 1919.

Built in 1890, the Old Red was made of huge blocks of gray granite and red sandstone from Arkansas and Pecos, Texas. The building features:-
- Acroteria/Wyverns: Four decorative creatures perched on top of it, which are acroteria in the shape of wyverns (meaning: a legendary winged reptilian creature with a dragon's head, wings and often two legs or sometimes none, and a barbed tail).
- A 90-foot Clock Tower.
- Courtroom.
