Le Train Bleu

Sender: Monkeyflower
Le Train Blue at Bloomingdale's, New York City
A nostalgic recreation of a luxury French Railroad Dining Car

I read that the Original “Le Train Bleu” was a luxury French night express train which carried wealthy and famous passengers between Calais and the French Riviera from 1922 until 1938. Yup, I can imagine the bejewelled rich people using the train/dining car. I wonder if this restaurant is also for the wealthy and famous?

I used to travel by train a lot (over 300km one way) to school and back during my school years. In those days, air travel was a luxury. So the majority of us schoolgirls used the train as the main form of transportation. But our train's "dining car" (cough!) couldn't even compare to this one (cough! cough!) even if it is a recreation :-D

Washington Ferries

Sender: Otoko
Washington Ferries

Washington State Ferries is the largest ferry system in the United States, serving eight counties within Washington and the Province of British Columbia in Canada.

I love travelling by ferries in our own state of Penang, it is just a short crossing to Penang Island where people can bask in the sun and enjoy the fresh breeze and scenery. Very relaxing, if you are not in a hurry. But I wonder how long the crossing is, for Washington ferries. The ferries look huge, like a mini-cruise..

Vespa 50S

Sender: Dancing_Sun
'V' is for 'Vespa'
Vespa 50S 1963y

There is only one Vespa and it remains the iconic scooter brand. The Vespa was a great way to make relatively short trips and I was told they were easier to ride than a motorcycle. When I visited my Italian friend in Tuscanny, I spent a lot of time on the back of a Vespa, holding on to dear life while she whizzed through the streets and weaved in and out of traffic. For someone who has never been on a motorcycle before, it was thrilling, it was scary, it was fun! I would never trade that memory for anything :)
The stamps are awesome too!!

'I' is for 'Incline'

Sender: LetsGoPens
'I' is for 'Incline' writes LetsGoPens!

Monongahela Incline, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The cable cars of the Monongahela Incline travel 635 feet of track and provide passengers with a panoramic view of downtown Pittsburgh. The incline began operating in 1870.

The Monongahela Incline, often called the Mon Incline for short, is the oldest continuously operating funicular railway in the U.S. Built at a cost of $50,000, the incline opened up Mount Washington to development, enabling people to live 600 feet above the city and still have easy access to factories and businesses along the river. The Mon Incline was consolidated into Port Authority operations in 1964 and declared a historic structure by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation in 1970. Since then, Port Authority has made a number of renovations to ensure this historic mode of transit is enjoyed for years to come. Today, more than 1,500 riders use the Mon Incline on an average weekday, with that number more than doubling for Saturday sightseeing.

We have our very own funicular railway system too, up the hilly and forested Penang Hill (in Penang) or locally known as "Bukit Bendera". A hill with an elevation of about 833 m (2723 ft), it is one of the main attractions to tourists and locals alike. Construction of the railway took place between 1906 to 1923, and it was opened to the public on October 21, 1923. I have braved the crowded queues many times, to go up Penang Hill on the furnicular railway, just for the fun of it. It is lovely to be in a cool (not cold!) environment sometimes :)

A Train Ride Not for the Squeamish

Sender: Helen
Graubünden. Schnellzug St. Moritz-Chur mit Ge 4/4 III 646+648 (SLM/BBC, 1993)

- A Schnellzug is an express train in German-speaking countries, where it refers to trains that do not stop at all stations along a line.
- Graubünden is a mountainous district, the land of the wild mountain goat, Heidi's home, the source of the Rhine, Switzerland's biggest holiday region.
- Chur is the capital of Graubünden.
- St Moritz is a resort town in Graubünden.

The train pictured in the card is crossing the Landwasser Viaduct (built in 1902), a single track six-arched curved limestone railway viaduct built over the Landwasser River. Kudos to the Swiss railway engineers of the 19th and 20th century who had to build a complex and efficient mountain railway system, along difficult mountain routes, with many bridges and tunnels needed for the trains to cross and go under.

I really think that the viaduct is one of the most spectacular bridges I have ever seen pictured. What a breathtaking sight. But I'm feeling squeamish already as if I am in that train  because....the ground is such a loooooong way down! By the way, are the first two carriages open-topped carriages? Surely not??
