Crystal Palace, Madrid

Sender: Aurora
Crystal Palace or Palacio de Cristal, Retiro Park, Madrid

Built in 1887, modelled on London's Crystal Palace of the 1850's, it was made almost entirely of glass set in an iron framework on a brick base, which is decorated with ceramics. In front of the entrance to the Palace are steps leading down into the large artificial lake of the Retiro Park. The lake contains ducks, geese, black swans and terrapins, who will swim close to the steps, or you can hire boats on the lake for a closer view.

Potsdam ~ Neuer Garten

Sender: Nordseekrabbe
Potsdam ~ Neuer Garten

Neuer Garten (New Garden)
The New Garden is one of the ensembles comprising the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin". Sanssoucci is the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. It was builtbetween 1745 and 1747.

I love this place and would like to visit it, but I would huff and puff for sure, climbing up those stairs. But the views would be well worth the climb!

Château de Pierrefonds (Oise)

Sender: Sylvain
Château de Pierrefonds (Oise)

Situated North of Paris near the Forest of Compiègne, Château de Pierrefonds is a majestic and beautiful palace. Originally built by Philippe d' Orléans in the 15th century and demolished on the order of Louis XIII in the 17th century. 200 years later Napoleon III ordered that Château de Pierrefonds be rebuilt as an imperial residence.

A bit of trivia, the castle serves as "Camelot" for the BBC TV series "Merlin", a series which I enjoy watching :)

Tsaritsyno, Moscow

Sender: Agapka
Moscow - Tsaritsyno - The gallery with arch

Renovated Arch-Gallery between the Bread House and the Great Palace at the Tsaritsyno state historical-architectural, artistic and landscaping museum-reserve.

Tsarytsino, meaning "Empress's village" in Russian, is an Imperial summer retreat that never was. Its history goes back to the 16th Century, when Irina, the wife of Tsar Fyodor, had an estate here, which passed eventually from Peter the Great to the Moldavian Prince Dmitri Cantemir, whose writer son sold it back to Catherine the Great in 1775. One of the most imposing structures is the Great Palace, replete with pilastered corner towers and rows of lofty pointed arches. Inside, it houses a museum, displaying some of Tsaritsyno's vast collection of antique tapestries, Russian and Central Asian folk art, contemporary glassware, ceramics and naive paintings.

The Catherine Palace

Sender: Stella
Tsarskoye Selo. The Catherine Palace

The Catherine Palace is named after Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great, who ruled Russia for two years after her husband's death. It is located in the small town of Pushkin, about 17 miles south of St. Petersburg.

The palace has ornate, baroque design. The exterior is a brilliant blue, trimmed in white and gilted with over 200 pounds of gold. The northern wing of Catherine Palace is topped by the five golden domes of the Palace Chapel. Although over 200 pounds of gold were originally used to gild the exterior of the palace, today it is just gold paint. The palace interior displays typical royal opulence; gold gilt scroll work, floors made of precious woods, and marble staircases.

Mariyinskyy Palace

Sender: nika_bp
Mariyinskyy Palace (1750-1755)
Nika writes that the palace is in the centre of Kiev and is now used for official receptions and other ceremonies by the President.

The palace is known for its white columns, pilasters, pilaster strips, cornices, platbands and pediments which show up effectively against the turquoise background. I think it is beautiful and all the more for its turquoise background, which is my favourite colour!
