Sender: ctrekoza
Urgup, 20 km to the east of Nevsehir, is one of the most important centres of Cappadocia. In historical order it was named Osiana (Assiana). In the Byzantine era, Bashisar by the Seljuks, Castle of Burgut by the Ottomans, and finally, Urgup by the Turkish republic. Besides the troglodyte dwellings from the Byzantine and Ottoman eras, Urgup is also known for the beautifully decorated facades on its houses. In the Byzantine period, Urgup was an important religious site and was the Episcopal centre of the surrounding towns, villages, churches and monasteries. Churches in Pancarlik Valley on the Urgup - Mustafasa highway are also of major significance and not to be missed.
